Update 2023: Unfortunately the Ximending location of Modern Toilet was a victim of COVID and closed down. You can visit the Shilin location though. These pictures are all the Ximending location.

LOOKING TO VISIT MODERN TOILET RESTAURANT IN TAIPEI?

I remember seeing this bizarre toilet restaurant on the Travel Channel years ago.  I thought how weird is that and then promptly forgot about it.

And then I was researching things to do in Taipei and one of the first things I saw was this.  Modern Toilet.  The weird toilet restaurant from forever ago.  I had to go.  But really, how could you not want to? (I get how you could not want to, it’s weird.)

Our experience at Modern Toilet Restaurant

It was my first day back in Taipei and I had two new friends to drag with me on this adventure.  We were deciding between a night market or Modern Toilet.

The night market won out the first night, but the next day, we were definitely going to be eating at Modern Toilet.  No doubt about it.  This was my real introduction to weird things in Asia.

Lucky for us, it was in the Ximending pedestrian area, just a short walk from our hostel!

After wandering around it for a bit trying to find it, there it was.  A giant glowing toilet on the outside of a building.  That had to be it.  I mean, what else could it have been?

We walked in and were greeted by some extremely loud dance music which is obviously the most logical thing to play in a restaurant full of toilets.

If you have other ideas on what they should play (or if they played something else while you were there), I’d love to hear them.

There were a few of floors and we were seated on the first.  Well, second, because it wasn’t on the ground floor.

We chose our toilets based on the coolest seat covers I think and were facing a large happy poop mosaic.  What more could you ask for at dinner, really?

The menu was full of poop shaped goodies served out of various styles of toilets.  They were not messing around when they designed this place and I very much appreciate that.

Poop lights.  Poop shaped menus.  Poop mosaics.  Poop pillows in the windows. Toilets for seats.  And Toilets for plates.  They had this down.

This was 100% the weirdest place I’ve ever eaten and I would highly recommend it to anyone in Taipei, more for the weird atmosphere than anything.  The food wasn’t the best, but it certainly didn’t taste like the decor either.

What is Modern Toilet in Taipei?

Modern Toilet is a wacky toilet themed restaurant in Taipei. And when I say toilet themed, I mean toilet themed.

I’m having a hard time finding the number of locations though. So there is at minimum one Modern Toilet restaurant, but maybe there’s 20, I’m not sure.

The original was in Ximending, the one I went to. The one you can visit now is in the Shilin district of Taipei.

I’ve seen there are branches all over Taiwan and in Hong Kong but I’ve also seen there are just three branches across Taiwan.

Where is Modern Toilet in Taipei?

Modern Toilet is no longer open in Ximending, but you can still go to the Shilin location. Here are some distances by car, subway may differ slightly.

It’s 2 minutes from Shilin Night Market, 15 minutes from Ximending, and 17 minutes from Taipei 101.

When is Modern Toilet Taipei open?

Modern Toilet is open everyday with slightly extended hours on the weekend.

Monday – Friday – 12 PM – 9:30 PM

Sunday – 11:30 AM – 9:30 PM

Saturday – 11:30 AM – 10 PM

Is the Modern Toilet Restaurant worth it?

Yes.  Unless you’re really offended by poop and toilets, then no, but otherwise yes. It’s to weird not to be worth it. I can’t speak for the Shilin location.

I will say, you’re going for the experience and atmosphere more than for the food. This tends to be the way with themed restaurants.

Why did Modern Toilet close?

Modern Toilet, like a lot of themed restaurants in Japan, were lost to COVID. With a lack of tourists, it wasn’t able to stay open, unfortunately.

Where to stay in Taipei

Meander Taipei – I stayed here and absolutely loved it! They have dorms and private rooms and it was so good for meeting people without being a party hostel. It’s near Ximending.

Meander 1948 – This is a beautifully modern hostel conveniently located above a 7-Eleven near Taipei Main Station!

Taipei 109 Hostel – This is another nice, modern hostel near Ximending. There isn’t much for a common area so it might not be the best if you want to meet people or socialize.

Star Hostel – This is another beautiful modern hostel near Taipei Main Station. This is a hostel with sustainability practices aimed at reducing waste.

  1. I only thought it was Japan that was home to odd restaurants like this! Taiwan is high on my list anyways, now knowing they have quirky places like this I will have to definitely go! Modern toilet seems like a hoot.
