The first time I drove down Burr Trail, I saw the trailhead for Halls Creek Overlook.  I told myself I would do that before I left.  Well, I didn’t.  I did hike to a different overlook though, so I say it still counts.  And to this day, I’ve been to three different spots overlooking Halls Creek and each is as wonderful as the other.

From Bullfrog, it’s about a half hour drive, maybe 45 minutes.  Follow it to the T and go left where it turns to dirt.  Take the first left turn you come across.  There is another dirt road leading to the trail, which is really just the road, but it was too rough to drive on.  

There is also a little trailer there and an old animal pen.  This is not the official Halls Creek Overlook Hike, but I preferred this view after having been to both, not that the other is bad.

The hike isn’t long, it takes about 30 minutes, slightly uphill, but nothing crazy.  It’s good for pretty much anyone.  Along the way, you’ll find a bunch of cool rocks that look like glass.  It’s just one section, so keep your eyes peeled, but it’s super cool.  

And the view is totally worth this short hike, I promise.  It’s the perfect stop if you’re doing the whole drive from Boulder to Bullfrog.  It’s also a great option of a short day hike from North Lake Powell in Bullfrog.

Just follow the dirt road to the edge and you’re there.  The views are phenomenal. You’re right across from Capitol Reef   The views to both sides are of Halls Creek, which eventually goes into Lake Powell.  

This is a great place to go to watch the sunset, but it’s also great on a sunny day with some nice wispy clouds.  The only time I really wouldn’t go is if it’s raining.

Helpful things:

• Bring water and wear sunscreen.
• Give yourself 2-4 hours for this hike, including driving time.  Two should be good, but more would allow more exploring time, this whole area is really pretty.
• There are rattlesnakes out here, so be aware of that.
• Be careful at the edge, it’s a pretty solid drop off.
• Four-wheel-drive is not necessary for Burr Trail.  A regular car will be fine.  I’ve done the drive from Bullfrog to Boulder in a Smart Car and my parents did in a Chevy Malibu.  Just use more caution on the dirt parts if it recently rained a lot.
