Last year I remember reading a blog post about Sand Hollow State Park.  I got confused and was thinking of Snow Canyon State Park.  I looked up both and they both looked cool, so in the morning before we went to Zion, we stopped at Sand Hollow for like, 30 minutes and left because it was so hot, not because it was terrible.  Sand Hollow is a reservoir state park just outside of Hurricane, not too far from fellow reservoir and state park, Quail Creek.

But, there’s a lake!  It’s impossible to be hot when there’s a lake to cool down in!  The problem here was that you could get swimmer’s itch.  I didn’t know what that was, but I wasn’t about to find out.  As someone who doesn’t like water, that’s not how to get me in it.  Instead, we started walking along a little trail along the shore.

Right away when we got out of the car and to sand a couple of ladies asked if we wanted to see a snake.  Well, yeah!  I always want to see a snake.  It was a quick one which made it hard to get a picture, but in the one above you can see it in the bottom left corner wiggling it’s way up the sand bank.

After walking a little bit and sweating out all the sweat I possibly could, we stopped at a little rock overhang and relished in the shade.  We spent a few minutes here watching people jump off the rocks below into the itchy water.  Neither of us were super excited about the park, mostly because of the heat, so it was a short visit.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s pretty and I get the appeal, especially since it was so hot, but we just weren’t digging it.  I think living on Lake Powell and seeing it in all it’s glory all day everyday had a little something to do with it.  You can go fishing, swimming, boating, and cliff jumping.  You can also rent kayaks and paddle boards.

If you’re in the St. George/Hurricane area and have a little spare time and want to take a dip, head out to Sand Hollow.  It’s a nice park that could be a fun little stop on a Southwest Road Trip or a side trip from Zion.

Apparently there are also Moki Balls along the shore, I think near the beginning of the parking lot, but I’m not 100% sure.  I have seen pictures of them, I just don’t know exactly where they are.  And for those of you who don’t know what Moki Balls are, they are little (or big) round sandstone balls with a hard shell of iron oxide minerals.  They’re super cool to find.

I know I’m not rushing to go back here, but I haven’t totally written it off either.  Didn’t love it, didn’t hate it.  It’s just not at the top of my list of places to return to.  Plus, there’s tons of other state parks I’d like to visit, even just in the St. George area, like Snow Canyon and Coral Pink Sand Dunes.  Plus, there’s more I want to see in Zion.  It does have great views of the surrounding cliffs and mountains, though.
