Edge of the Cedars State Park is kind of like the Anasazi State Park Museum in Boulder, but bigger.  I remember every time we drove past the sign for it I just thought well, that looks like a terrible state park because I had no idea what it was and I’ll be real, the landscape in that area isn’t the best.  But then I read Finders Keepers and I had to go.  So when my parents came to visit and we had a day of ruins plan, I figured this was the perfect addition to the day.  As usual, you can always skip down to the bottom for more of the how-to info.

Bluefields to Big Corn

When I first decided to go to the Corn Islands, I was pretty excited for the journey there.  It was supposed to be a crazy adventure of a night bus into the terrifying little town where the panga leaves from followed by a just as terrifying night in Bluefields.  Rumor had it white lobster washed up all the time.  I didn’t get to see any though.  Darn.

Daydreaming of the Corn Islands

The Corn Islands in Nicaragua were one of my favorite parts of my trip.  Definitely my highlight of Nicaragua.  Little Corn Island was just the perfect little place.  All of the backpackers that went there described it as a holiday in a holiday.  That’s pretty accurate.

I think I’ve mentioned before that I don’t like water activities that much, so an island might not seem like my first choice, but I would go back in a heartbeat, even if I had to do it by land and sea again.  It was a week of laying around, drinking coffee, and reading with the occasional dip in the ocean.

How To Get To The Corn Islands In Nicaragua

When people hear “We’re going to the Corn Islands,” they usually get a little jealous.  Then they usually ask a follow-up question: “how are you getting there?”  And when you respond with “we’re going by land,” they usually cringe a little bit with fear and disgust.

This trek takes about three days with good planning and has been rumored as nightmarish.  That’s right folks, nightmarish, and we were about to do it.  There are a few options when it comes to getting to the Corn Islands.  I’ll explain how we got there and the other options.  And if you are planning a trip, make sure you spend some time on both Big Corn and Little Corn.  They both have a lot to offer.

My Favorite Things About Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands

There were a lot of highlights of my Ecuador/Galapagos trip two years ago.  Two whole years ago.  That seems like too long, but I still know what I enjoyed the most.  Some things are just too good to explain in a few paragraphs though and deserve their own posts.  These are my favorite things in no particular order.

I say it all the time.  I can’t wait to go back!  I feel like I say it about everywhere I go, but I decided to choose the ten places I want to go back to the most.  There are all kinds of reasons I want to go back.  I didn’t spend enough time there.  I just love it that much.  The food.  The scenery.  Everything.

These are the ten places I would love to go back to and why, in no particular order.  I saw a similar post on World of Wanderlust and thought it would be fun to do myself.  Unfortunately, I don’t have plans to go back to any at the moment, but I know I will sooner than later.

Why Central America Is Perfect For Your First Solo Trip

When you think of going on your first solo trip, you probably think of South East Asia because that’s where like, everyone goes.  I think I briefly thought of going there but decided against it for that reason.  Then I found Central America.  I’m not saying it’s off the beaten path or anything, there were tons of backpackers everywhere, I just think it’s less common for first solo trips.  I think.

I love beaches.  The less crowded, the better, of course, but I really do love beaches.  I wouldn’t say I’ve been to tons of the, but I’ve been to my fair share around the world so far and these are my favorites.  This is also the perfect way to take my mind off the freezing cold outside.

Things I Miss about Central America

I think I’ll always like Central America the most because it’s the first place I went alone for a long period of time.  I was forced to figure things out for myself and I cried more than I should have, but I also had a great time and wish I was there more than I was home.  Sorry everyone at home, but working three jobs just isn’t for me.  If you look at my Instagram, there are almost as many pictures from Central America recently as there are of things at home.  I just miss it, all of these things about it.

The International Dark Sky Association has dark sky parks all over the world, but today were looking at all of the ones in Utah, which there are a lot of.  One of the best things to do on a Utah road trip is stargazing and Utah has some of the best opportunities for it all over the state.
