Lost in Little Wild Horse Canyon

I think it might actually be impossible to get lost in Little Wild Horse Canyon unless you climbed up and wandered off the trail.  But I don’t know, I didn’t do that.  I didn’t even follow the whole trail.  Rounding out around 8 miles, we didn’t have time and the weather was not ideal for slot canyons.

Finding Mountain Lions in the San Rafael Swell

This place gives me the creeps.  That’s what I’m starting with.  Makes you want to go there, right?  Yeah, totally. . .

This was my first time there, I eventually went back, but that’s for later.  This time I just knew I wanted to go the direction away from Goblin Valley, so straight instead of turning towards it.  I had no idea what was back there, but I needed to find out.  Turns out there are some pictographs and some pretty cool canyons and views.

Hike To The Fire Wave And Pastel Canyon In Valley of Fire State Park

The two things I wanted to see in Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada on our way to Vegas were the Fire Wave and Pastel Canyon.  The Fire Wave is rumored to be super cool, almost rivaling, and not to be confused with, The Wave in Arizona.  More on that later.  And Pastel Canyon is supposed to look a little bit like Easter threw up all over it.  It’s safe to say my expectations were high after taking a gander at good old Google images.

Finding Petroglyphs in Valley of Fire State Park

After reading about Valley of Fire on Alex in Wanderland and knowing I was going to Vegas in September, I figured why not make a stop there since I’ll be in the area.  I wasn’t really sure what to expect, well hot, but that’s about it.  I knew about the Fire Wave, which is supposed to be TOTALLY WICKED, and Pastel Canyon, which looks SUPER COOL on Google, and that was it.

After driving through Capitol Reef a couple times and exploring the south end a little bit, it was time for a proper visit to the scenic road in the north.

There is the highway that passes through the park and the 10-mile (one way) scenic drive near the visitors center taking you further into the park.  Both have a number of hikes and orchards along the way with plenty to do for a whole or half day in Capitol Reef.

Goblin Valley State Park: The Coolest State Park In Utah

Goblin Valley State Park in Utah is the perfect side stop on a southwest US road trip.  It’s much less visited than the nearby national parks and can be visited in just a few hours on your way to other parks, like Capitol Reef or Lake Powell from Moab.  It’s my favorite state park in Utah so far because it’s such a fun place.

Pedestal Alley: The Perfect Afternoon Hike Near Bullfrog, Utah

It was a coolish morning, as coolish as the desert can be in May, and I was off to explore Pedestal Alley on Burr Trail.  There is parking on the left side of the road across from the trailhead, which is marked with a sign, on the right.

The trail basically follows a wash and is also marked with cairns, which are more helpful once you’re on the open rock.  The trail follows the wash most of the time, but occasionally it goes up onto the sand through the plants.  If you want, you can just follow the wash instead of the cairns.

The best part about working at night was that I had all morning to go do stuff and explore.  This time is was Surprise Canyon in Capitol Reef.  It was my second time in the park and this time I had a goal.

Lower Muley Twist Adventures In Capitol Reef

It was my birthday and I wanted to go somewhere.  After rounding up some new friends, we set off for Capitol Reef with, well, no plan.  After following Burr Trail to the end of the paved section, we went left to get to Capitol Reef.  The first part of it is really pretty, but instead of going straight to follow Notom Road, we went left to continue up the switchbacks on Burr.

I think this is probably on everyone’s bucket list, whether they know it or not.  Ok, that could be wrong, but I bet it is on a lot of lists.  What is it you ask?  Oh wait, you probably read the title already.  It’s Antelope Canyon.  Lower Antelope Canyon to be exact.
