Our next national park showdown is two parks that are both extremely popular and incredibly different from each other: Yellowstone and Grand Canyon National Parks!

These might be hard to compare because they are so different but we’ll do our best.

Yellowstone is known for it’s thermal features and abundance of wildlife while the Grand Canyon is know for, well, the canyon, and the Colorado River.

The best way to use these guides is to pay the most attention to the questions relevant to your interest and when you’ll possibly be visiting.

Of course it can all be helpful but knowing which is better in winter doesn’t matter if you’re going in July.

You won’t really find specific things to do in or much logistical information in these posts, this is just comparisons of different aspects of both parks.

Is Yellowstone or Grand Canyon better in summer?

Summer is the peak season at both the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone. If you want to visit the north rim of the Grand Canyon, summer is the time to do it (it’s closed in winter).

If you’re going to the south rim, it’s going to be extremely hot. Like, high 90s and low 100s kind of hot. That’s miserable, especially if you want to hike (don’t hike in that kind of heat).

So, Yellowstone starts with a win thanks to it’s much more pleasant weather. Yes, it will be extremely busy but it’s more difficult to visit in the winter.

Is Yellowstone or Grand Canyon better in fall?

Fall is my favorite time to be in the desert because it isn’t too hot and it isn’t too cold. It’s not as busy (usually) and a bit more low-budget friendly. You might even be able to catch the cottonwoods changing!

However, seeing Yellowstone while the leaves are changing would be so beautiful so I’m technically giving this round to Yellowstone, with a catch.

If you’re going earlier in the fall (September), then Yellowstone. A lot of it starts to close at the end of September and in October.

If you’re going in late fall (mid-October/early November), then I would pick the Grand Canyon.

Is Yellowstone or Grand Canyon better winter?

Now, this one is tough. Yellowstone in the winter is extremely unique and more difficult to visit.

You get to see the thermal features surrounded by snow. How cool is that? Plus the only way to access in winter is by snowmobile or snowcoach, except for the Mammoth area which means it won’t be busy.

That said, Grand Canyon is much easier to visit in winter (the south rim at least) and is 1000 times better for hiking.

While I would love to give this round to Yellowstone, I’m giving it to the Grand Canyon, with a slight catch.

If you want a snowy winter national park experience, pick Yellowstone. If that doesn’t matter or you want to hike, Grand Canyon.

Is Yellowstone or Grand Canyon better spring?

Neither park really comes to mind as a spring park but one is coming out slightly ahead for me.

I’m giving this round to the Grand Canyon, too. Spring in the desert can be extremely windy, but aside from that it’s very pleasant hiking weather.

It’s also much less busy (unless you’re going for spring break which I would highly recommend not doing if you can avoid it).

Yellowstone will likely still be pretty inaccessible in the spring making it harder to visit.

Is Grand Canyon or Yellowstone better for hiking?

This one will entirely depend on the season you plan to visit. If you’re visiting in the summer, then Yellowstone wins.

However, for the rest of the year (and this round) Grand Canyon wins. Yellowstone has almost 1000 miles of hiking trails but you can only hike them in late spring, summer, or early fall.

Hiking in the Grand Canyon in the summer is miserable and can be quite dangerous because of the heat. It has a lot fewer hiking trails than Yellowstone but can technically be hiked year-round.

Is Grand Canyon or Yellowstone better for nonhikers?

This is a tough one. For this I’m assuming you want to do something in the park, other than just drive through (that question is next).

I’m also going to assume no hiking trails, but shorter boardwalks are OK since they’re usually easy.

There are plenty of things to do in Yellowstone besides hiking like looking for wildlife, walking the boardwalks through geyser basins, and white water rafting.

In the Grand Canyon you can ride the Hermit’s Rest shuttle there and back, bike the Rim Trail, stop at 1000 different overlooks, do a helicopter tour, and see the Desert Watchtower.

I think I’m giving this round to the Grand Canyon. While both have tons of things to do, I think the Grand Canyon is just a bit better for this.

Is Yellowstone or Grand Canyon better to just drive through?

The Grand Canyon is a fantastic park to just drive through because you can go in one way and out the other and have seen all the areas.

Overlooks are easy to access, your biggest headache will just be crowds and parking (in the summer or holidays).

However, I’m giving this round to Yellowstone because there is just a lot more to drive through and see.

The scenic drive in Yellowstone is kind of like an 8 with five offshoots to enter/exit the park, two on the top corners, one mid-left on the bottom, one straight out of the bottom, and one bottom right corner.

When we went I think we drove south to north on the west side then did north to south on the east side the next day.

If you’re not stopping much, you could do the whole thing in a day, probably without the offshoots or middle horizontal section.

Is Yellowstone or Grand Canyon better with just one day?

While you can see a decent amount of Yellowstone in one day, I wouldn’t recommend it.

Grand Canyon wins this round, for sure.

While the park itself is pretty sizeable, you can easily drive the south rim in one day, even with stops at overlooks and a longer (or two shorter) hikes.

Is Yellowstone or Grand Canyon better with more than one day?

You can probably tell by now, Yellowstone is huge which makes it perfect for a multi-day trip.

You could easily spend more than one day at the Grand Canyon, especially if you wanted to see the north rim, too (on a summer visit), but Yellowstone wins this round.

More than one day in Yellowstone will give you much more time to enjoy the sights and will let you see more of them.

It will also give you more time to look for wildlife and won’t leave you rushing if you get caught in a bison jam, which will probably happen.

Is Grand Canyon or Yellowstone better for wildlife?

This isn’t even a competition, Yellowstone wins this one by a long shot. You might get to see an elk or deer at the Grand Canyon, and ravens and lizards, but that’s probably it unless you’re really lucky.

Yellowstone definitely wins this round. While the thermal features are what make Yellowstone unique, the wildlife is a huge bonus.

Some of the big wildlife you can (likely, will) see at least some of in the park includes bears, elk, wolves, bison, moose, (the Big Five of Yellowstone), as well as coyotes, deer, pronghorn, and so much more.

Be bear aware!

While you’re visiting Grand Teton National Park you’ll want to be bear aware. There are both black and grizzly bears in the area.

They usually try to avoid people but may behave unpredictably if they, their young, or their food source feels threatened. Grizzlies are often much larger and have a distinct shoulder hump.

While you’re hiking you’ll want to carry bear spray and have it somewhere easy to access, not buried in your backpack. I would avoid bear bells. You’re voice is a more effective way too alert bears to your presence and bells are annoying.

Does the Grand Canyon or Yellowstone have a more unique landscape?

Both Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon are known for their incredible landscapes, but I think one is a bit more unique than the other.

The Grand Canyon is amazing but there are plenty of other very impressive canyons, even just in southern Utah (like along Hells Backbone, Island in the Sky, and White Canyon.

That means Yellowstone wins this round, too. While you can see similar features at Lassen Volcanic National Park, this is something much harder to find something similar to.

Not only are the colorful hot springs and geysers, but there is the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone with the waterfall, boiling mud pots, a huge lake, the boiling river, mountains, and the stunning terraced hot springs at Mammoth.

The variety is what really puts Yellowstone ahead here. While hot springs can be found around the US, it’s nothing like this.

Is Grand Canyon or Yellowstone better for a big road trip?

Both can be great as part of a bigger road trip but one stands out more to me.

You can easily visit Yellowstone, Grand Teton, and Glacier in one trip because they’re pretty close together.

But, I think the Grand Canyon is better as part of a big road trip. There are SO many national parks in that area, it’s hard not to go to them all.

Grand Canyon wins this round thanks to it’s proximity to plenty of other places in the Grand Circle:

So, which is better: Yellowstone or Grand Canyon?

Well. This happened on one other showdown buuuut it’s a tie! I always hope this doesn’t happen, but sometimes it does.

As a tie breaker I unofficially polled a few people I know who have been to both (including me) and it came in at Grand Canyon: 1, Yellowstone: 9, plus one vote for Yellowstone from someone who hasn’t been there yet but has been to the Grand Canyon (and did enjoy that).

So, there you have it. While it’s technically a tie, I’m calling this a solid win for Yellowstone based on popular vote.

The general consensus was that Yellowstone just has so much more to offer and you can’t find landscapes like this very often (in the US), but there are plenty of amazing canyons around the southwest.

  1. I like them both, and I agree with what you say here.

On a totally random note, I get emails from my local liquor store. Today I got one titled “reds from around the world”.
