I love Everglades City. I don’t know where I want to live forever, but Everglades City is one of the contenders so far (along with Moab and the Asheville area, if you were curious) and it’s in the heart of the Florida Everglades. Or maybe technically on the edge of them.

You guys. I did it. I walked through knee-deep swamp water and didn’t get eaten by anything! That’s right. I was terrified and got a little panicky, but I did it.
This was on the Gator Hook Trail in Big Cypress National Preserve this last winter. It’s a great intro to swamp hiking and pretty easy if a little long.

The first (and main) stop on our South Florida road trip was Big Cypress National Preserve. Camping there was awesome and we did that for three nights, then spent two nights in Homestead, and stayed one more in Everglades City at the Ivey House.
