Like Slovenia, I realized I had a ton of pictures from Taiwan that I never shared. Or probably even edited. Sometimes I like to go back and look at pictures from past trips because I’ll see some and think why didn’t I do anything with this yet? So, these are those pictures. The ones I never did anything with or didn’t have anything to write about them or didn’t know what they were. A little collection of the odd ones out.
I’ve found out what a few of these places are, there is the Fo Guang Shan Buddha Museum, that’s all the stuff with the Buddha, and the Xuan Xang Temple. There are some from Taroko Gorge near Hualien and the Dragon Bridge in Taitung. There’s Jiufen, Sun Moon Lake, and Kaohsiung. And you can’t forget Xiao Yehliu, Kenting, and Jiji.
Tips for visiting Taiwan:
- Give yourself more than a day or long layover. I met a few people doing this, and it’s a great way to see Taipei if you’re limited on time, but there is so much more in Taiwan that should be seen.
- If you do only have one day, these are some of the best things to see in Taipei.
- Definitely go to the East Coast. Spend some time in Hualien, an awesome base for exploring Taroko Gorge. Taitung is another cool city on the east coast, not too far from Hualien.
- If you are going to Taroko Gorge, do a little research and planning on how to get there, how to get around there, and what to do there. I went as part of a full island tour, so I didn’t have to plan anything. Ask at your hostel if they have any recommendations on how to visit most efficiently. Colorful Taiwan is a fun hostel in Hualien.
- Just know, if you go to the south, like Kenting, in the winter, it will probably be extremely windy. It’s still really pretty, though, so don’t just not go because of this.
- If you have a lot of time and are feeling really ambitious, visit one of the small islands off the coast like Lanyu, Green Island, Xiao LiuChiu, or Penghu. Definitely, research them before you go, things like transportation, how you get there, accommodation, food, things to do, all that stuff.
- Go to as many night markets around the island as you can and try as many things as possible.
- Be respectful at temples and other religious sites.
- Taiwan is an awesome place to work on street photography, especially in Taipei and night markets. That was part of why I loved both so much.
- If you want to see the whole country, but don’t want to go on your own or are limited on time, here is a five-day tour option.
- East coast road trip (especially on scooters) are pretty popular, as well as cycling trips.

Oh wow I didnt realize how diverse of a landscape Taiwan has. It’s so pretty! How did you find Taiwan as far as costs? Was it affordable for travelers?
Right?! It’s got a little bit of everything! It’s definitely possible to visit on a budget. There’s hostels pretty much everywhere and you can definitely find cheap food at night markets and little hole in the wall restaurants. Transportation is super affordable, too.
I never really thought about traveling to Taiwan, but these photos are making me think about it! It seems like a beautiful place to see. How long would it take to see the major highlights?
I never thought much of it either, it was a pretty random place for me to pick to visit haha. There are tours around the island that get a lot of major sights that are only five days, if that helps for a rough guide. I would maybe say a week though so you’re not spending as much time on trains as you are exploring.
Oh my gosh Megan your photos are STUNNING!!!!!!!!!! And you have no idea how happy I am to see this because I’m originally from Taiwan and I’m just so glad to see more visitor interest in our beautiful little island. That said, I feel like you know Taiwan better than me already hahaa. I was born there but moved away when I was young and haven’t even been to all the places that you listed. Sun Moon Lake is definitely high up on my list tho and I’m hoping to visit next time I’m home. Thanks for sharing!
