Hell’s Backbone Scenic Drive from Boulder to Escalante, Utah is one of those things I’ve seen and driven past a million times since I first moved out here and we finally decided to drive it earlier this summer.

The TripAdvisor reviews were pretty mixed, but we were already in Boulder so decided to go anyways.  The plan was to do the whole drive and camp in Escalante, but like most of our plans, it changed.

Bears Ears To The Abajos: An Underrated Mountain Getaway

In 2017 we went camping in Bears Ears on my birthday.  We had no immediate plans to go back when we left for Grand Junction on my birthday in 2018.  Our plan was to do the Trail Through Time then camp in McInnis Canyon and do some hiking.  Well, good old Ginger (my old 2016 Ford Escape) wasn’t quite cut out for the roads of McInnis Canyon and we needed a new plan.  We started going through what was sort of in the area.  There was the San Rafael Swell, Moab, House on Fire and other ruins in on the Cedar Mesa and, of course, Bears Ears.

Hovenweep National Monument is a small monument on the Colorado/Utah border, not too far from Cortez (Colorado) and Bluff (Utah,) but not particularly close to anything else other than the Canyon of the Ancients National Monument.

After passing the sign for it a few times with no real idea of how far it was from Bluff or Cortez, we decided to make a pit stop here on our way back to Bullfrog from Cortez.

How I went two years without knowing about this hike and these petroglyphs is beyond me.  The 100 Hands Pictograph hike in Escalante is a great, short hike if you’re just passing through the park.   It’s right along the main road so you don’t have to make the perilous journey down Hole in the Rock Road.

I know not everyone likes hiking.  Not everyone can hike for one reason or another but you still want to visit the national parks and cross them off your bucket list.  I know not everyone has time to hike when they visit national parks.

I drove past Potash Road in Moab so many times and had no idea what was down there.  Then I saw a picture of Corona Arch and found out that was down Potash road then had to go, but what else is there?

One evening after spending the afternoon in Arches, we decided to head down Potash Road just outside of Moab to see what the deal was.

LOOKING TO HIKE THE MESA ARCH TRAIL IN CANYONLANDS?

The first time I went to Island in the Sky in Canyonlands, I knew I liked it, but what I didn’t know was that I missed a whole lot of it.  I also learned that I like Island in the Sky a lot more than The Needles.

Corona Arch is an awesome, easy hike near Moab, Utah.  It’s the perfect way to spend a few extra hours and get a little hiking in when you’re visiting Moab.

The trailhead for Corona Arch is about ten miles down Potash Road, which is just after the entrance to Arches National Park.  Along Potash Road, you can also see petroglyphs, dinosaur tracks, rock climbers (most likely,) and Jug Handle Arch.

Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park is a little slice of sandy paradise not too far from Kanab, Utah.

It’s the perfect stop if you’re passing through Kanab on your way to or from Zion National Park or as a fun stop on a weekend getaway in southern Utah.

You can either climb the dunes or, if you’re an off-road enthusiast, you can drive your off-highway vehicle there! Just remember, if you’re hiking, keep an eye out for vehicles and if you’re on a vehicle, watch out for hikers!

**Hidden Canyon is closed indefinitely due to rockfall (as of August 2022)**

Last year I got the National Geographic Secrets of the National Parks book.  I didn’t really look through it until I was home recently.  When I was looking through it to get ready for our trip to Zion, I saw a hike I hadn’t heard of before.  That hike was Hidden Canyon.  Once I read about it, I knew I needed to do it.

Snow Canyon State Park: Lava Tubes And Pioneer Names

Snow Canyon State Park in Southern Utah is the perfect little day getaway from St. George.  It’s a great way to spend a day out hiking while avoiding the crowds in nearby Zion National Park.  It’s almost like a mini Zion.  Don’t go in expecting huge, towering canyons like Zion, but it’s similar.  Just much smaller.

Over the last few years, I’ve visited Zion National Park quite a few times.  I’ve been to the main area of the park and down Kolob Terrace Road, but I hadn’t been to Kolob Canyons yet.  I didn’t actually realize it existed until a few months ago.  Crazy, right?

As you know, I was just in Wisconsin for about a month for the holidays.  I had all these plans to do all kinds of fun stuff in the area and then it was freezing cold, like below zero the majority of our time there.  So all those cool things I wanted to do have to wait for the next trip back.
