Zion Vs Antelope Canyon: Which Is Better?

We’re back with another showdown, this time with two very different but both extremely popular places: Antelope Canyon and Zion National Park!

I’ve been to Zion quite a few times over the years and have visited Upper, Lower, and Antelope Canyon X, so I feel pretty qualified to compare the two.

And that, I think, will be very difficult because they’re just SO different!

And, as usual, I think both are definitely worth visiting, but if you can only choose one for whatever reason, hopefully this helps you narrow it down!

Also, keep in mind that Zion is an entire park that you should spend at least one full day in (two is better) and Antelope Canyon, while it has three sections, is only a 1-3 hour activity. That’s what makes comparing them so difficult.

Is Antelope Canyon or Zion better in summer?

We’re starting off with an easy one. Yes, Zion has The Narrows so you can cool off in the mid-day heat, but the other hikes will be quite hot.

Antelope Canyon, on the other hand, any section of it, is a slot canyon so you’ll be a bit cooler in the shade of the canyon here.

Antelope Canyon wins this round but Zion has it’s ways to cool down, too. Summer is also the only time of year you get the famous light beams (at peak time).

Is Antelope Canyon or Zion better in fall?

This is another easy one for me! I think the slot canyons are great in fall because they’re less busy, but I’m giving this one to Zion!

It’s less busy (probably still fairly busy, it is Zion after all), it’s slightly less expensive, the weather is a thousand times better, and the cottonwoods are turning yellow!

The weather is the main reason I picked it but the other two are close seconds.

Is Antelope Canyon or Zion better in winter?

This is another easy one! While I would say fall is the best time in Zion, I will pretty much only visit in winter now!

(With the caveat that I have the freedom with my schedule to do so, but if you can only visit in the summer, it’s still absolutely worth it!)

Antelope Canyon will be a lot less busy in winter, too, but the lighting isn’t quite as good (still good, this isn’t to say skip it in winter). The lack of crowds does make it worth it though.

However, Zion definitely wins this round! You can still hike The Narrows in winter, but you’ll need a dry suit to do that. You can rent them in Springdale.

My biggest reasons for visiting in winter though, are that it’s WAY less busy and it’s actually not a budget-breaker!

And you might get to see it snowy, which I think is beautiful and very exciting. I also think the Emerald Pools Trail is better in winter than summer.

Is Antelope Canyon or Zion better in spring?

This may shock you, but Zion wins this one again! Like the other seasons, Antelope Canyon is still going to be great (just without the light beams) but Zion outside of summer is just.. better.

I would expect similar conditions and prices to fall, but with no leaves on the trees, the possibility of The Narrows being closed for water levels, and wind. Spring in the desert is very windy.

Is Antelope Canyon or Zion better for hiking?

Antelope Canyon is basically an easy stroll, so this is another major win for Zion. I mean, it’s got two of the most well-known national park hikes (The Narrows and Angel’s Landing).

And there’s tons of other great hikes in the park like Observation Point, Hidden Canyon (if it’s open, it currently is not), Sand Bench Trail, Emerald Pools, Watchman Overlook, and Canyon Overlook.

Is Zion or Antelope Canyon bigger?

Can you tell who our winner is going to be (for the whole thing) yet? Because this one is going to Zion again!

Antelope Canyon has a few sections of slot canyon that you can visit (Upper, Lower, X, and Secret) but they are all short sections of canyon, typically 0.25ish miles.

Zion on the other hand has dozens (a couple hundred?) of miles of hiking trails and three different areas to explore: Zion Canyon, Kolob Canyons, and Kolob Terrace Road (plus the east side of the main part of the park).

Is Zion or Antelope Canyon busier?

This one is a draw for a few reasons. Zion gets about 4.5 million visitors per year. It’s spread out over a lot of ground, but the majority spend most of their time in Zion Canyon (the main shuttle area of the park).

Antelope Canyon has four sections but most people go to Upper and Lower. I’m getting mixed numbers on yearly visitors, anywhere from one to four million, which is shocking to me!

If it really is four million (according to Dixie Ellis Tours, under “So, is Antelope Canyon a national Park?”), my mind is absolutely blown.

Four million in a large national park is less.. busy feeling? than in a slot canyon, even though only so many people are in there at a time. It still feels very crowded in peak season.

Is Zion or Antelope Canyon easier to get away from crowds?

I think Zion would be the easy answer here, but I’m actually going to say this one is a draw, too!

Yes, Zion has three sections to explore and two of them will automatically get you away from the crowds but there are hikes in the main area for this too (anything except Canyon Overlook on the east side) and the Sand Bench Trail particularly.

But Antelope Canyon has two other canyon tours that are MUCH less busy than Upper and Lower, and that’s Canyon X and Secret Canyon.

Is Zion or Antelope Canyon better for nonhikers?

If you just want a stroll, Antelope Canyon is pretty good, though some (Lower) require ladders, while others (X) have a very steep hill. Upper requires the least.. effort, for lack of a better term.

So, I’m giving this round to Zion because it’s much better if you aren’t hiking. There are a few easy walks, like the Riverwalk, the Pa’rus Trail, and The Grottos Trail.

Plus just riding the shuttle into the main canyon is an experience. And there are the three sections of park you can just drive through, so no lack of things to see.

Is Zion or Antelope Canyon better to just drive through?

I basically just answered this one in the last point, but Zion wins this round. Not just because it’s beautiful but you literally cannot drive through Antelope Canyon. Because it’s a slot canyon.

Is Antelope Canyon or Zion better for seeing wildlife?

I wouldn’t use wildlife as a decision maker for either of these, but if I had to pick one, it’s Zion.

Expect to see lizards for sure, squirrels, things like that, but you may also see deer further into the main canyon and possibly bighorn sheep on the east side of the tunnel (the side where you don’t need the shuttle).

Does Zion or Antelope Canyon have a more unique landscape?

My first reaction was to say Antelope Canyon because just look at it, but, and don’t hate me for this, they all look the same.

All three areas of Zion look very different and you can have a lot of different experiences here.

But lets be real, particularly for Antelope Canyon. They all look the same. A slot canyon is a slot canyon is a slot canyon. Zion wins this round, too.

Is Zion or Antelope Canyon better with just one day?

I feel bad for Antelope Canyon at this point. Zion wins this round too, with a caveat.

If you just have a couple of hours, Antelope Canyon will be much better since the tours are typically 2-3 hours, depending on the canyon.

You could technically see two or three sections of Antelope Canyon in a day, but that will be an expensive day, especially if you’re more than one person.

And you could only see one at peak time and the others would end up just being dark and underwhelming.

You can do Angel’s Landing (permit required) and The Narrows in one long day, or one of those plus a couple other shorter less difficult trails.

Is Antelope Canyon or Zion better with more than one day?

Are we really surprised here? It may be obvious, but Zion wins this round too.

If you LOVE slot canyons and want to see more than one, then that, but overall, Zion is much better with more than one day.

You can do both of the big hikes (if you have a permit for Angel’s Landing) and multiple shorter less popular (but probably still busyish) hikes. And you could see more than one part of the park.

Is Zion or Antelope Canyon better as part of a bigger road trip?

This round is an easy tie! While they may be at opposite ends of a loop from Vegas, they are both perfectly part of the Mighty Five loop.

Vegas to Zion to Bryce Canyon to Capitol Reef to Moab/Arches/Canyonlands to Monument Valley to Page/Horseshoe Bend/Antelope Canyon to Kanab back to Vegas. It’s literally perfect.

So, which is better: Zion or Antelope Canyon?

Normally in my big showdown posts I tally up the winner, but I don’t even need to do that here. Zion is clearly the winner thanks to it’s ease of visiting, variety of sights and activities, and, well, almost everything.

All this said about how great Zion is, don’t let this convince you Antelope Canyon isn’t worth visiting, because it is, at least once.

It’s just impossible to compare four short sections of a slot canyon to an entire national park.
