One of the first things you’ll see when you get to San Juan del Sur is the giant statue of Jesus.  You can see it from most places in town.  This is the Cristo De La Misericordia, or the Christ of Mercy Statue, or the Jesus Statue as a lot of people will call it.  Walking up to the Christ of Mercy Statue is one of the best budget activities in San Juan del Sur.  It’s cheap to enter and you get awesome views of the area from the top.

Bluefields to Big Corn

When I first decided to go to the Corn Islands, I was pretty excited for the journey there.  It was supposed to be a crazy adventure of a night bus into the terrifying little town where the panga leaves from followed by a just as terrifying night in Bluefields.  Rumor had it white lobster washed up all the time.  I didn’t get to see any though.  Darn.

Daydreaming of the Corn Islands

The Corn Islands in Nicaragua were one of my favorite parts of my trip.  Definitely my highlight of Nicaragua.  Little Corn Island was just the perfect little place.  All of the backpackers that went there described it as a holiday in a holiday.  That’s pretty accurate.

48 Hours on Isla de Ometepe in Nicaragua

I arrived on Ometepe on my own, but quickly befriended some Australians at my hotel.  I didn’t find Ometepe to be the best place to be alone since everything is so spread out.  It’s a good place for company.  The first full day I had was spent laying around the hotel lobby because it was too darn hot to really go do anything.  I eventually went to get lunch and wander a bit, but Moyogalpa is pretty small and I covered most of it pretty quickly.

How To Get To The Corn Islands In Nicaragua

When people hear “We’re going to the Corn Islands,” they usually get a little jealous.  Then they usually ask a follow-up question: “how are you getting there?”  And when you respond with “we’re going by land,” they usually cringe a little bit with fear and disgust.

This trek takes about three days with good planning and has been rumored as nightmarish.  That’s right folks, nightmarish, and we were about to do it.  There are a few options when it comes to getting to the Corn Islands.  I’ll explain how we got there and the other options.  And if you are planning a trip, make sure you spend some time on both Big Corn and Little Corn.  They both have a lot to offer.
