I say it all the time.  I can’t wait to go back!  I feel like I say it about everywhere I go, but I decided to choose the ten places I want to go back to the most.  There are all kinds of reasons I want to go back.  I didn’t spend enough time there.  I just love it that much.  The food.  The scenery.  Everything.

These are the ten places I would love to go back to and why, in no particular order.  I saw a similar post on World of Wanderlust and thought it would be fun to do myself.  Unfortunately, I don’t have plans to go back to any at the moment, but I know I will sooner than later.

Slovenia

Why?

It was so pretty!  I feel like this is what I want to say for everything on this list, but it’s true.  I’ll just say that’s a reason for everything and I’ll only say it on this one.  I liked seeing all the wineries, I loooved the Adriatic Coast.  The small towns were like wandering through fairytales.  And they have awesome castles.  Plus, there are so many things to do in Slovenia that I missed on my first trip.  I would love to include it in a bigger Balkans trip.

What not to miss:

  • Spend a few days in Bled to explore the town, Bled Island and the castle overlooking the lake.  Make a day trip or two to nearby Triglav National Park, too.
  • Visit the wineries around the country and do tastings of wine and olive oil.
  • Wander the streets of Ljubljana and do some coffee shop hopping.  You can even stay in a hostel that used to be a prison (Hostel Celica in case you’re wondering).

Taiwan

Why?

There is so much that I just haven’t gotten to do in Taiwan yet.  I loved Taipei and definitely want to go back and see more of the city, but I didn’t get to see much of the rest of the country.  I want to see all of it’s little islands, try even more food, and do a lot more hiking on the east coast.

What not to miss:

  • Eat your way around the country at the night markets.
  • Temple hop around Taipei between night market stops.
  • Take a hike around Taipei at Mount Elephant, Fairy Foot Print or Mount Teapot near Jiufen.  There is tons of hiking on the east coast, too.

Panama

Why?

I only got to spend like, three days in Panama on Bocas del Toro, so I just didn’t see enough of it.  I want to go hiking in Boquete, explore Panama City, and relax on the San Blas Islands.  I would definitely go back to Bocas del Toro, too.  I feel like I should probably go snorkeling here, too.

What not to miss:

  • Try a bioluminesence tour in Bocas del Toro at night and bike around Isla Colon during the day or do some island hopping and snorkeling then relax on the beaches and enjoy chocolate and coffee in the hills of Isla Bastimentos.
  • Sail from the San Blas Islands to Colombia if you’re headed that direction and feeling adventurous.
  • Go whitewater rafting or hiking in the clouds in Boquete.

Kyoto, Japan

Why?

Well, Japan in general because there are so many amazing places to go in Japan, but especially Kyoto.  I would like to go back when it’s a little warmer out.  It was pretty cold when I was there and it made walking around a tiny bit less fun, but I still enjoyed my time there.  I didn’t really see any of the big sites in Kyoto, like most of the temples, nearby Osaka, or even Mount Fuji!  But I did get to Nara Deer Park and the Arashiyama bamboo forest.

What not to miss:

  • Make a day trip to Nara Deer Park and the Arashiyama Bamboo forest.  If you have a lot of time, spend a day at each.
  • Rent a bike to get around the amazingly flat city to see all the temples.
  • Try some Japanese beef in the Gion district at night.  Wander around during the day to admire the classic architechture.

Florida

Why?

Gators, Disney, beaches, Biscayne, Everglades, springs, St. Augustine, state parks galore, and the keys.  I want to do everything in Florida.

What not to miss:

  • Obviously, you have to go to Disney.
  • Take a road trip to see the springs in the north and relax on the beaches along the coast.
  • Visit the national parks in the south, take in the city life in Miami and finish off with a beach break in the Keys.

Lake Atitlan, Guatemala

Why?

This was my favorite place in Guatemala.  I think I spent ten(ish) days here and just loved it.  I didn’t even do that much, but I just loved everything.  The views, all the little towns, the markets, hanging out on the shore, kayaking.  All of it!  I would really like to go back and base myself in San Marcos or Panajachel next time.

What not to miss:

  • Do some hiking and climb Indian Nose or Volcan San Pedro.  Both can be done from the town of San Pedro.
  • Rent a kayak to explore a little more of the lake or head to San Marcos for some swimming at the park on the coast.
  • Spend an afternoon wandering through the markets in Panajachel.

Jackson, Wyoming

Why?

I think Jackson is just my favorite small town and a place I always want to go back to, even in the winter.  I want to see more of the Tetons and do more hiking in the area.  I also miss the juice place, the Rustic Inn, and Thai Me Up.

What not to miss:

  • If it’s in your budget, do a wildlife safari, summer or winter.  If that’s a little too pricey, you can do it yourself, too!
  • Wander around town checking out the art galleries and little shops.
  • If you’re feeling adventurous, take a rafting trip in the summer.

Mexico

Why?

I was only in Cancun for a few days and Chetumal for one, so it’s pretty safe to say I haven’t really seen Mexico.  I’ve been dreaming of Oaxaca, Mexico City, San Cristobal, and Guanajuato for a couple years now.  Plus, I love Mexican food.

What not to miss:

  • Explore the different ruins in the south like Tulum, Coba, Chichen Itza, and Palenque.
  • Swim and snorkel in the Centoes between trips to the ruins and relaxing on beaches.
  • Wander through the colorful streets of Guanajuato and eat all the street food!

Germany

Why?

The Alps, the cute villages, the food.  I loved my time in Germany.  It was already eight years ago, which is crazy.  The more I read about Germany on other blogs and the more I see it on Instagram, the more I want to go back to see more of it.

What not to miss:

  • Stop in the Christmas store in Rothenberg Ob Der Tauber and walk around the city on the wall while admiring all the buildings.
  • Channel your inner artsy self in Berlin.
  • Get a little active and do some hiking in the Alps or take the cable car to the Zugspitze.

New Zealand

Why?

Because it’s New Zealand!  I went for school, so we moved pretty fast and didn’t get to see a lot of stuff.  Granted, what we did see was wonderful, I just want to see even more of it and do a lot more hiking there, too.  I especially want to visit the north island and do some hiking near Auckland.

What not to miss:

  • If you’re a Lord Of The Rings fan, make sure to see all the filming locations.
  • Hike your way around Mt. Cook National Park, climb glaciers, or see the glow worm cave.
  • Go to Queenstown to get a rush of adrenaline going skydiving, bungee jumping, or paragliding.

Little Corn Island, Nicaragua

Why?

Because this is my favorite little island out there.  The beach is perfect, or at least was when I went.  The water was perfect and it was the best holiday in a holiday possible.

What not to miss:

  • If you’ve always wanted to learn how to SCUBA dive, you can do that here.
  • Walk around the island and check out the lighthouse tower thing.
  • Just spend a few days relaxing on the beaches reading.  If you don’t want to do that everyday, take a snorkeling trip one afternoon.

Where have you been that you can’t wait to go back to?  Have you been to any of these places?

  1. Yesss! So many places I want to go back to. Lots of people say “why? There’s too much of the world to see!” but if you enjoyed it, why not?! 🙂 I think my top 5 would be New Zealand, Vietnam, Thailand, Iceland… and Australia if that counts, because I lived there for a year so there are lots of reasons I want to go back rather than for touristy reasons!

  2. How long did you spend in Slovenia? We are considering it for a working holiday visa! There are so many places here we haven’t been and would love to go to! Which is the first place you think you’ll go back to?

    1. Ohh that would be amazing! I was only there for two weeks. I would go back to Bled first to explore the town more and Triglav National Park nearby. Then I think the Adriatic Coast. I loooooved it there! Then Ljubljana. I loved it all haha

  3. I haven’t been to any of these places, but I loved all the photos you have in here! Your photos and write-up about Jackson, Wyoming surprised me – it’s not really an extremely touristy town (from what I know anyway) but it sounds and looks like a really lovely place to visit.

    1. Thank you! 😀 It’s super busy with tourists in the summer. A lot of people go on a trip to Yellowstone since the Tetons are right there, too. It’s definitely not as touristy as other places with lots of little souvenir shops though. They do have a couple, but it’s a lot more art galleries and outdoor stores. Either way, I love it haha.

  4. Great post, I always say I try to not go back to places as there’s so many to see but sometimes you just can’t help it! I’ve walked 8 sections of different routes of the Camino de Santiago in Spain , and visited Cambodia 4 times before living there recently for 14 months!

I’m now back in Mexico for the second time as I only briefly visited before and like you Lake Atitlan is on my return to list…hopefully this year to stick around for a while 🙂

    1. I totally get it! There’s so many places I still want to go! I hope you can stay at Lake Atitlan for a while, that would be amazing!

  5. This is such a fun list!! Kyoto would definitely be on my list as well – there simply wasn’t enough time to fully soak in during the first time I went. Well I hope you can head back to your list soon enough!

  6. I love your list. While I have so far only visited Germany (I am German), Japan (I live here) and Taiwan (for a very short visit) I totally understand that you want to go back to these places. So I believe you that the other 8 places are also totally worth a visit. New Zealand and Mexico are on my travel list for next year and I hope to find the time to visit the other places as well.

    1. Very cool! I would love to live in Japan. New Zealand and Mexico will be amazing! Where are you going in Mexico?

  7. What an inspiring post. I consider myself pretty well travelled and have only been to three of these places. Slovenia is particularly enticing for me, think it will have to go on my list for this year. Where would you go there if you only had a long weekend?

    1. Thank you! Hmm, I think I would either go to Bled to explore the town and nearby Triglav National Park and the castle and Bled Island. The other place I would want to go (for a different weekend) would be the Adriatic Coast to hang out in Portoroz, Piran, and Izola!

  8. I love this list! I actually lived in Germany as a child and still have family there! I now live about an hour from Florida! I have been to Slovenia and Mexico too, all wonderful places!

    1. Thank you! My boyfriend is from Florida, so I’ll definitely be back there a lot. That’s awesome you got to live in Germany growing up!

    1. It’s awesome! I love Latin America, it’s definitely my favorite region so far! I can’t wait to go back!
